Posted on October 16, 2021October 16, 2021Wet bumblebee and other things Last night, brought in dwarf tomatoes and purple and chocolate peppers since temps forecast (and did reach) into 40s. On Thursday night, before another night rain, Paula and I planted more wildflower seeds. Mom sent these Yellow Puff seeds. We scarified them by scraping their hard coats on the concrete patio. On Thursday morning, I saw this very dew-drenched bumblebee. I was hoping it might be a two spotted bumblebee but I think the yellow on its abdomen was just clumping together with the dew??
Posted on October 14, 2021October 14, 2021Bone meal On Thursday last week, I put bone meal for phosphorus around the three tomatoes that haven’t flowered this year. Monday, I found flowers on one. I haven’t checked the others yet. Maximilian sunflower flamingo. Monday, I think this is switchgrass from some native seed mix. This is Sorghastrum nutans, another major tallgrass prairie species. Thanks Jeanne for the correction!! Monday, a dog smiled. Monday, also sorted seeds from Mom and others to plant now and later in winter. Monday, got seeds in the mail!! Monday, a plant hopper on okra. Sunday stir fry contained garden poblanos and jalapeƱos.
Posted on October 8, 2021October 8, 2021It lives!!!! Liatris mucronata from home!! This is its first year, so I expect it will be big and showy next year. For now, I’m just happy it’s alive.
Posted on October 7, 2021October 7, 2021Early to bed Covered in pollen! I think both are Bombus impatiens.
Posted on October 1, 2021October 1, 2021Fall for sure A cold front with rain! Maximilian sunflower in full bloom!
Posted on September 5, 2021September 5, 2021Even wilder Saturday Okra flower keeping its banker’s hours. Taco week leftovers include garden potatoes and garden sweet peppers (a few mini bells and one Jimmy Nardallo sweet pepper) and tomatoes in cheese sauce. Wet dog helping me water. A kind friend who was moving gave me a string of solar lights which I put in the trellises today.Ā They have a switch, so I can have them on only as needed, so we don’t distract the night bugs from their business.
Posted on July 18, 2021July 18, 2021Assorted non-bee news (mostly) Roundup is starting to take effect on Bermuda grass. I can’t plant the buffalograss until I get that nasty invader out. A different bumblebee (or maybe robber fly mimic?? It flew different I thought) came to get water while I watered rainbow garden beds. Saturday morning dog. She is four years old as of Friday! Ironweed buds! Looking forward to the purple! Briar helping me garden on her birthday. Buffalograss corner of prairie is a good laying spot! I trimmed all the dying dill and cilantro out of the herb bed so I could see what’s going on with parsley, sage, and oregano better.
Posted on July 8, 2021July 8, 2021First zinnia A volunteer from last year. The front yard ones in the rainbow beds are still small, though growing.
Posted on July 3, 2021July 3, 2021A day without rain?? Dill seeds are developing. A lightning bug rests on carrot leaves. This pillbug (rolly polley) looks very fresh, perhaps it just molted? It’s on a dayflower. The prairie is very lush and some of the tepary beans are sure climbing tall! Beautiful fungi on woodpile. Dog says things are okay!
Posted on July 1, 2021July 1, 2021Tuesday… I’m behind This dayflower looked lovely after rain with purple coneflower and Rudbeckia in the background.
