Posted on August 3, 2022August 3, 202208/02/2022 fall and winter greens starting now Seeds, but you can’t see them. Basil you can see. New root extending from plant window.
Posted on August 3, 2022August 3, 202208/03/2022 unexpected The greeneyes is starting to bloom in the backyard prairie! This grew from seeds that I put out a year, maybe two years, ago. Hmm… What is this brown lumpy thing on the butterfly milkweed? An exciting, dare I say unexpected, find by Paula… The Unexpected Cycnia moth caterpillar! I spotted this second Unexpected Cycnia caterpillar on a different plant a few inches away. Apparently they only eat milkweeds, so we are very pleased to find one in the orange butterfly milkweed section of the rainbow garden. It’s also our 150th yard species on inaturalist! A dead cicada. No fun buzzes but Briar hoped. Watermelon in the farm share this week. Yum!!
Posted on July 31, 2022July 31, 202207/31/2022 reminder for later planting One 3×8′ bed. We’re planting in containers now and will set out later.
Posted on July 31, 2022July 31, 202207/31/2022 melon debut for this year Paula wields the knife. Oh no! Bad spot in our canteloupe! The bad spot carefully removed leaves us with snack size halves. They were cold and delicious. Saving seeds from this variety, Madhur Ras melon. I put it in the hot shade on the west facing front porch. It has a lot of melon goo on them that we couldn’t rinse off, so maybe they’ll be easier to clean after drying.
Posted on July 31, 2022July 31, 202207/28/2022 baby cacti Paula’s Coryphantha sulcata babies from Montana are doing really well.
Posted on July 19, 2022July 19, 202207/18/2022 The Missouri fluttermill primroses just keep going! I’m wondering if it’s that I’m giving the new Justicia pilosella behind them water? It’s usually just a cup or two. A mystery squash has emerged. The green basils are getting sunscald on their leaves, I think. The amethyst basil are shaded a bit by the mealy blue sage and look better, but also wilt more often between watering.
Posted on July 17, 2022July 17, 202207/17/2022 straw bale sampling and other afternoon torture We appear to have some potatoes in the straw bales. The Granny Smith apple is having a hard time. The leaves are turning brittle and possibly sunscalded? We are on mandatory water conservation until the city pump is fixed Monday hopefully so the most I can do is hand water it. However, this apple tree is the most westward facing so maybe it’s just having problems. Native Texas dandelion in backyard earlier.
Posted on July 10, 2022July 10, 202207/10/2022 eeeee!! Five Coryphantha sulcata from Montana!!! Eleven in this tray. You can see the roots!! Another one with roots. “What are you doing to my favorite window perch?” Five in the last tray. A few here were somehow upside down. We’ll see if they make it! One upside down in a pot with plastic wrap. I think the food containers with clear lids are the way to go. Seven days from planting to sprouting. About 50 seeds, 23 up so far.
Posted on July 9, 2022July 9, 202207/09/2022 driveway crack The baby juniperleaf plant in the driveway crack is blooming! The original plant seems to have turned orange and possibly died. The cuttings I have in the house do appear to be rooting, so hopefully I can get this species established in the rock garden or somewhere that’s NOT A CRACK soon. It has adorable flowers.
