Posted on June 2, 2022June 2, 202206/02/2022 New book in the mail! The Social Wasps of North America by Chris Alice Kratzer. It looks very useful. Awards for bravery all around tonight. Shacks walked right past Briar and she stayed put. Purple coneflower finally opening up! Ironweed is budding, seems early?? This is one of two dill seedlings in the herb bed. Pretty sure now that this is the Mexican sage from Judy. Whoa, standing cypress about to bloom! The just-planted two leaf senna doing okay. The older two leaf senna seems to have gotten nibbled. I’ll have to consider if I should put some Vaseline around it against earwigs or a wire cage over it maybe for rabbits. A non native moss rose (Portulaca). Dog behind.
Posted on April 23, 2022April 23, 202204/23 a bit of planting On the left, you can see the now three containers of white currant tomato. Around the culinary sage, I split up the thyme into three chunks and planted it around the sage’s edge. To the right, you can see two containers with baby Mexican plums that have not found immediate homes. Now they’re potted and can keep. Behind those is lemon balm I divided in two as a coworker wants some.
Posted on October 27, 2021October 27, 2021Tuesday evening A milkweed beetle!! Very exciting! It’s sitting on a tepary bean though, silly friend. Salvia greggii are doing amazing right now. “landlocked gumbo” says the Chef. Okra, mini bell pepper, tam jalapeño pepper, and moss curled parsley all from garden.
Posted on October 10, 2021October 10, 2021Saturday harvest and new lake The original moon and stars watermelon is still here. The tendril is turning brown so it may be ready soon? I harvested 162 g of oregano from the front and back yard. The Chef dehydrated it and removed the stems, and the final dry weight was 20 g. Some blackjack oak acorns. Walking towards a new lake. Briar got to stand in the lake. A leopard frog in the raised bed, hiding.
Posted on September 26, 2021September 26, 2021Ground cherries Not as many as last year I think. Testing dehydrating a few to see how they are dried. Also drying oregano at the same time.
Posted on September 6, 2021September 7, 2021Holiday Sunday An outdoor dinner. Garden basil and oregano. Moved the chives and garlic chives that Judy gave me last year. Maybe they’ll like this spot better. Uzbek golden, little, and New Kuroda carrots. Gram helps me get seeds out. Fall seeds planted of cabbage, mizuna, greens, and cauliflower. Tomatoes and peppers for overwintering. And a few pots of Roman chamomile for the front yard ground cover. This is where I shall attempt peppers and tomatoes over the winter. This goldenrod was already here and is doing very nicely. A giant 1″+ horsefly on a backyard window sill. Never going outside again. I lied. Outside again. Chiltepin peppers. Frostweed doing alright after it died back earlier in summer. A little spider got this Eastern Tailed-Blue on the englemann daisy. Texas mallow blooming! The non native clematis. I’ll clean it out over the winter. Okra flower A bumblebee on the okra!
Posted on July 30, 2021July 30, 2021Cats on new home All three Black Swallowtail caterpillars on their new home, the parsley. Now my carrots are safe again. I think I took this pic yesterday?
Posted on June 11, 2021June 11, 2021Yesterday’s stuff The Chef got three jars of dehydrated onion stems/leaves from our harvest of granex bulb onions. The bulbs are still drying in the hall. My hat is irresistible to Gram. He tries to eat the string and tulle until I get fed up and put it up. Fleabane in full bloom! Photography is boring for dog. Dill starting to bloom. Elderberry is thriving. Full view. It’s just one plant! A tiny bee on Gaillardia pulchella. A young (?) lynx spider eats a house fly while sitting on coreopsis. Coneflowers are going strong. I need to look up the name of this skipper, which is sitting on a dayflower leaf.
Posted on May 22, 2021May 22, 2021Other cloudy day yard stuff Widow sedum in my cactus planter is blooming. Anybody know what these are? I have a lot. Most of my cornflowers are blue. One rebel is dark purple! Englemann daisy looking good. Dill leaves are very pretty. No swallowtail caterpillars yet.
