Posted on May 13, 2022May 13, 202205/13/2022 world’s most adorable banana spider and other friends The featured adorable tiny baby banana spider (Argiope aurantica). They are also known as garden spiders. That’s more common, but I prefer banana spider. A tiny spider has caught a stilt bug. Mom, do you remember what these ones with the messy webs were called? The plant is a native Euphorbia. Here’s an ant and a living stilt bug. I think it’s a Maximilian sunflower leaf they’re on, but I don’t know why I would have put one in this little pot. We’ll see. A bombyliid bee fly on the coreopsis out front.
Posted on May 1, 2022May 1, 2022Strong plants and strong ants Horsetail just shoves the hard soil out of the way!! More Stark Surecrop Pie Cherries. Soaker hose hard at work for the winecups and chamomile. The hose has a leak so I put the leak over a pot of Maximilian sunflowers. The Chef spotted ants carrying away this insect. Maybe a soldier fly?? He also spotted this milkweed bug. Hi milkweed bug! All three butterfly milkweeds in the front yard rainbow garden are up, plus the wild milkvines are pushing up everywhere too.
Posted on May 1, 2022May 1, 202204/30/2022 assorted Yarrow from home about to bloom. Linum rigidum (yellow flax) from home is blooming! It’s an annual, but I’m hoping it will go to seed. The mailbox irises are varied this year! Closeup of purple. Closeup of pink. This englemann daisy has lost a few petals! The two leaf senna is growing a second pair of leaves!! Two baby flax are just starting their adult leaves. The false gaura is doing fine but there was also this very nice fly on its label. Gulf coast penstemon from the NPSOT plant sale is blooming!
Posted on June 26, 2021June 26, 2021Rainbow garden ready for rain The marigolds for yellow have started to sprout! Zinnias continue to sprout. This picture shows a broader view of the zinnias. Break time in the backyard. Fun native grass. I like the yellow near the middle of this red moss rose. An interesting fly. Alright back to rainbow garden! These are the recently arrived plants in the clever box. They even put finger holds to help you get the pots out without dumping them out! Ready for planting. In the front, two pineapple sage and ‘Jacob Kline’ beebalm, all red. Looking the other way from purple. Here I added three ‘Diane’ purple Salvia greggii. Once I got the plants in, I worked on the back trapezoidal bed. I got the general shape of it and the forecast rain over the next few days should let me get it smoother afterwards.
Posted on June 11, 2021June 11, 2021Yesterday’s stuff The Chef got three jars of dehydrated onion stems/leaves from our harvest of granex bulb onions. The bulbs are still drying in the hall. My hat is irresistible to Gram. He tries to eat the string and tulle until I get fed up and put it up. Fleabane in full bloom! Photography is boring for dog. Dill starting to bloom. Elderberry is thriving. Full view. It’s just one plant! A tiny bee on Gaillardia pulchella. A young (?) lynx spider eats a house fly while sitting on coreopsis. Coneflowers are going strong. I need to look up the name of this skipper, which is sitting on a dayflower leaf.
