Posted on April 16, 2023April 16, 202304/16/2023 second dwarf spiderwort The second individual of Tradescantia tharpii is starting to bloom! I hope they make seeds and spread.
Posted on April 15, 2023April 15, 202304/15/2023 spring at home in person Mystery green bit in caliche planter. Looks suspiciously like a grass but we’ll find out! Maybe something good! The yellow irises from Judy are in full bloom now! One of the two Camassia scilloides has TWO flower buds! The other Camassia scilloides has a much smaller flower bud. The angusta has a similar sized bud that is on a shorter stalk as of yet. The two leaf senna is coming back! This one got big last year and made a lot of seeds. The other smaller two leaf senna from last year is off to a great start this season! I put a lot of Missouri fluttermill primrose seeds in the yellow area of the rainbow garden )near the two leaf senna) and one is coming up! Yay! The dwarf spiderwort continues to bloom! This one has two flowers now! The other individual hasn’t flowered yet. This mystery grass has appeared in many areas under the oak tree. It seems wrong for millet but I don’t remember wheat in the bird seed mix? Any ideas are welcome. iNaturalist suggests the wheat genus but I don’t think there are any native ones here.
Posted on April 1, 2023April 1, 202304/01/2023 earwig night one survived! The Agastache survived with its defensive ring of petroleum jelly. Gonna have to go buy another tube. The Blackfoot daisy made it overnight! The second daisy made it too! There are fewer earwigs in the rock garden. Paula pointed out last night that our other agastaches that got completely chomped by earwigs are putting up new shoots. Here’s the second one also having a tiny sprout.
Posted on March 31, 2023March 31, 202303/31/2023 thanks past self! Past me ordered plants in the winter! Pets very much liked the box. It had good smells. Here Gram steps right in before I’ve unpacked the crinkle paper. Good thing there was cardboard protecting the plants too. Gram moved to sit on the crinkle paper and smells one of two Blackfoot daisies. Briar observes. We put the daisies in the rock garden. I had one in the backyard once when we first moved here but I think it was too wet. The rock garden is the driest hottest spot in the yard. The other plant we got was an orange Agastache. The damn invasive human-introduced earwig horde has already started eating it, so we are trying petroleum jelly around the base. It has worked for tomatoes before but didn’t work on a different Agastache recently, so we’ll go back out before bed and check again.
Posted on March 11, 2023March 11, 202303/11/2023 Camassia (wild hyacinth) emergence Camassia angusta was up a few weeks ago so I was worried about the C. scilloides bulbs we put out, but they are coming up now too! Another C. scilloides bulb coming up. I am naming it based on its location. This mystery plant with milky sap was kindly identified by Abby as salsify. It apparently has an edible root so we will contemplate its fate.
Posted on January 10, 2023January 10, 202301/09/2023 indoor lights for basil and seedlings I got tired of competing with cats for limited shelf space with still-insufficient sunlight. So I got a plant growing light from online! I’m hoping it will perk up the sad basils which have been spending too much time in the garage and are a pain for us to tote in and out of the garage and house for sunny afternoons. This is safely away from cats in the guest room. Once the peppers and other seedlings are up, they will also get this good strong light.
Posted on December 15, 2022December 15, 202212/14/2022 winter plantings I ordered plants from a new to me nursery, Missouri Wildflowers Nursery. Hmm box with ok smells? Gram came running to see if he could have the box. “Hello little brother “ The packing by this nursery was quite clever! Shredded paper mostly over the rosettes or dormant pots. They also kindly marked the plants that were dormant. A few other species had low winter leaves (spiderwort) or rosettes (asters, pussytoes). Even the dormant plants had happy roots! The soil held together with roots but weren’t aggressively bound in. Paula found a small cicada larva under the oak tree while planting! We also uncovered an ancient Nylabone from Briar’s youth. She was unimpressed.
Posted on November 13, 2022November 13, 202211/09/2022 also before hard frosts The copper canyon daisy I planted this spring bloomed! It looks nice near the marigolds and Mexican sage. Only the copper canyon daisy has survived the two hard (26F for Norman overall) frosts since this was taken. The flowers wilted but its leaves are fine.
Posted on September 24, 202209/24/2022 rock garden The NPSOT plant sale rain lily has seeds! Another friend from that plant sale, the Justicia pilosella, seems much happier here up front in the sandy soil of the rock garden than it did in the backyard.
Posted on September 10, 2022September 10, 202209/10/2022 rain lily seed pod The rain lily seed pod has three lobes. It’s still green. A mistflower in a pot is flowering! None of the ones in the ground are flowering yet. The showy milkweed that died back earlier this summer is alive!!! Yay desert perennials. The Mexican sage from Judy has started to bloom!
